2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

HAL-9000 is the Discovery's "central nervous system," and therefore, his body is the ship itself. Dave, Frank, and the audience, know HAL primarily as an LED lens, or "eye," and a soothing male voice.
Above right, we see Dave Bowman and Franke Poole in a sound-proof pod, discussing the possibility of disconnecting HAL if it turns out he's become unreliable. They don't know, however, that HAL (whose LED eye is barely visible in the center background) is reading their lips and making some plans of his own. Above right, we see Dave Bowman in HAL's "brain room" as he prepares, despite HAL's objections, to give the computer a lobotomy.

The star child.
